User Manual For At And T Dsl 5031 Nv Map
So my wife wanted us to move apartments to save on rent. Which means I have the nightmare of tearing down my fully functioning office and then getting a new ISP and hoping I can change some small things and get back to work.
Well, our new complex's only provider at the moment is AT&T. And while the great news is that there's fibre to the unit, AT&T recommended only running a single cat5 cable and no coax. Not a biggie as I can get wired connections where I want via powerline if need be, even if not ideal.
The AT&T service is 75/8 and measures quite close to spec. Works great with all the usual consumer applications like smart tvs/phones/etc.
They provide a wireless gateway combo unit that you can't replace even though there's an ont sitting in the demarc that has an ethernet port (tried it). There is some sort of security authentication that I don't want to bother trying to circumvent. So I'm stuck with the Pace 5268AC FXN as the default gateway and 'modem'. It's actually not that bad of a unit besides the massive amount of bugs in it.
It has a feature called 'dmzplus' which essentially is a special type of dmz that in addition to acting like a normal dmz, assigns the public IP to the device in the dmz. This is great for my application, which is to put the Netgear VPN router in that dmz so I can connect to the other vpn endpoints.
And so here's where the problem comes in. While the tunnel comes up to both different endpoints, no real traffic will pass--not a ping, not rdp, nothing. I can log into the endpoint routers from outside the tunnel and see that both of them also show the tunnel being up.
After quite a bit of reading and research, it seems that the Pace 5268 seems to block all GRE traffic, effectively dropping all tunnel traffic. I found a thread on spiceworks where someone dealt with this on three sites with some Cisco 5505s that were the vpn endpoints and he eventually went with another provider to get the tunnels working properly again.
One idea I'm going to try is a static IP. I can get a block of 8 IPs (5 usable) and they're coming by to 'install' these on Monday. Then I can simply assign a static IP to the Netgear and maybe that will solve the issue--except that the caveat is that these static IPs are also handled by the Pace 5268 in a weird proprietary almost like nat one-to-one method. So again GRE packets may get dropped.
I'm not sure if changing to a AT&T business uverse account would help because the spiceworks thread indicated that those accounts were business accounts upgraded from business dsl.
The only other provider is time warner/charter, but their rollout to this area is still a month away.
Anyone have any experience with AT&T and a workaround for this issue? I'd like to get the tunnel up and working and start getting caught up on work. Thank you in advance for any feedback!
